FAQ: Why Is My GWI Audience Showing a Sample Size of 0?

Learn why a GWI audience may display a sample size of 0 after being imported from Audiense and discover the steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Overview

If you've imported an audience from Audiense into GWI and notice that the audience displays a sample size of 0, this does not necessarily indicate that the integration has failed.

In most cases, this occurs because GWI and Audiense are referencing different survey waves when matching audience attributes.

This guide explains why this happens and outlines the available options for updating your audience within GWI.

Why Does This Happen?

When Audiense transfers an audience to GWI, audience attributes are matched against GWI survey questions. By default, GWI only selects its most recent four survey waves (quarters). However, Audiense can match audience attributes using questions from any available survey wave, including older waves. As a result, an imported audience may reference attributes that belong to an earlier survey wave that is not currently selected in GWI or is no longer included in the default wave selection. When this occurs, GWI may display an audience sample size of 0.

How to Resolve the Issue

If your imported audience displays a sample size of 0, try one or more of the following options. Select an Earlier Survey Wave

If the matched audience attributes belong to an earlier survey wave, select that wave from the Wave selector located at the top of the GWI interface. For example, you may need to select a wave such as Q3 2022.

Change the Audience Operator

If your audience definition uses the AND operator, consider changing it to OR. Using the OR operator may broaden the audience definition and increase the available sample size.

Update Audience Attributes

You can also modify the imported audience by updating the attributes that are no longer available in the currently selected survey waves.

Options include:

  • Removing outdated attributes.
  • Removing an entire attribute group.
  • Replacing older attributes with similar attributes from more recent survey waves.

Some attributes include labels such as "Up to Q3 2022" or "Up to Q4 2023", indicating the latest survey wave in which that attribute is available.

Modify Your Imported Audience

After an audience has been imported into GWI, you can continue refining it to better meet your analysis requirements.

You can:

  • Add additional attributes.
  • Remove existing attributes.
  • Modify logical operators.
  • Change the selected survey waves.

These adjustments allow you to tailor the audience while ensuring that it aligns with the available GWI survey data.
